How Charter Schools Like HOPE have been Reinventing Middle and High School for 20 Years
For more than two decades, HOPE has helped redefine the middle and high school experience in Colorado. Our model blends the flexibility of online learning with the support and connection of in-person instruction, giving students a learning experience that feels both personal and achievable. Every student deserves an education shaped around their strengths, challenges, and dreams, and an alternative path gives them the space to learn in ways that respect who they are and who they want to become.
Charter schools across the state share this commitment to meeting students where they are. By offering models that allow for more choice, more individual attention, and more room to grow, charter schools give students options that traditional systems may not always provide. HOPE is one example of how this flexibility can unlock belonging and possibility for students who need a different kind of support.
By doing so, we show our students that graduating high school is not only possible but can be a personal, supportive, and empowering experience. They learn that school can fit their lives, honor their goals, and give them the confidence to move forward with purpose.
What is a Charter School, and What Makes Them Different?
Charter schools like HOPE are public schools that operate with greater flexibility and autonomy than traditional schools. This freedom allows charter schools to design learning programs that better meet the needs of their students and communities. For HOPE, this means reimagining what school can look like and creating opportunities for students who otherwise may not have thrived in a traditional high school setting.
A Colorado charter school is guided by the belief that students learn best when their school has the room to listen, adapt, and respond to what they need. Charter schools follow the same academic standards as other public schools, but they have more freedom in how they teach, support, and connect with their students. This flexibility creates space for learning environments that prioritize belonging, personal growth, and meaningful relationships.
We have designed a high school experience where every student learns in a way that suits them best. Classes are delivered online, but students also have access to one of 21 Learning Sites across Colorado where they can study in person, connect with teachers, and build relationships with peers. Some students attend in person most days, while others learn primarily from home. Many do a mix of both. This flexible model ensures that learning fits around each student’s life, not the other way around.
Over the past two decades, HOPE has built an inclusive learning environment where every student, regardless of background or ability, can discover their strengths and pursue success.
A 20 Year Commitment That Goes Beyond Academics
Flexibility is only one part of what makes HOPE unique. We understand that a great education isn’t just about academics; it’s about ensuring our students feel seen, supported, and ready for the future.
We believe in supporting every part of a student’s life, because academics are only one piece of what helps a young person succeed. We are committed to investing in programs that strengthen students both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it is access to free and healthy meals or the many enrichment and extracurricular activities available at HOPE, our entire community is dedicated to creating an environment where students feel cared for, supported, and ready to grow.
We offer a variety of extracurricular activities that build community and belonging, from student leadership opportunities to creative clubs and athletic programs.
HOPE also equips students for what comes after graduation. Through career readiness training, job preparation resources, and a focus on personal development, students gain the skills and confidence to take their next steps, whether that’s entering the workforce, pursuing higher education, or following another path of their choosing.
Most importantly, HOPE’s team of teachers and mentors take time to understand each student as an individual. They celebrate progress, guide students through challenges, and provide consistent encouragement. This personal support helps students not only achieve academically but also grow in confidence and resilience, qualities that will serve them for life.
Why Student-Centered Learning is Vital for Future Success
Student-centered learning puts the individual at the heart of the education process. Instead of expecting every student to learn the same way or at the same pace, Charter Schools like HOPE design flexible programs that adapt to students’ strengths, goals, and challenges.
This approach doesn’t just make school more enjoyable and inclusive; but delivers far better outcomes. We have seen firsthand that students in supportive, personalized environments are more engaged, more likely to graduate, and better prepared for life after high school.
The flexible blend of online and in-person learning allows students to take ownership of their education while still feeling connected to a caring community. Whether a student needs extra support in a particular subject, thrives on independent study, or benefits from hands-on guidance, HOPE makes it possible.
This approach works. Each year, HOPE graduates go on to college, careers, and community service, bringing with them the self-confidence and skills developed through a learning experience that was truly made for them.
Every Student Belongs, Believes and Becomes Their Best Self at HOPE
No two students are the same, and their education shouldn’t be either. For more than 20 years, HOPE has proven that when schools listen to students, meet them where they are, and support them as individuals, the results can be life changing.
Whether learning remotely, in a hybrid format, or fully on-site, HOPE students receive an education built around their needs, goals, and dreams. It’s a model that empowers them to succeed today and inspires a lifelong love of learning for tomorrow.
